He strongly believes that if they get the investment, the company will be back on track and he would save his employees from been fired. He also personally knows leaders of Haosha Sports Limited Company and feels uncomfortable to manipulate data, even if he thinks it would be the best for the business. What Should She Do? Medical Malpractice in Taiwan

Country represented in the case: Taiwan

This case refers to the situation that occurred in one central hospital in Taiwan and it involves three people: Mrs. Lin, the administrator for quality management, Dr. Wang, the famous doctor, and a junior resident. The case describes how Dr. Wang had the commitment to conduct the surgery. On the day of the surgery, Dr. Wang was nowhere to be found, so his junior resident was asked to substitute for him and perform the surgery. The surgery didn’t go well and the patient died in surgery. If the hospital reveals that it was Dr. Wang who did not show up for the surgery and the junior resident had never performed such surgeries before, the reputation of the hospital and Dr. Wang would be ruined, with a tons of patients leaving the hospital. Another option is to close the investigation and put all fault on the junior resident.

Mrs. Lin, the administrator for quality management, has to make this decision.

Investigating the Stolen Jewelry Case

Country presented in the case: Brazil

Mr. Dantas worked for the Brazilian Government Agency as a State Attorney. One day, he was helping a middle-class woman to find out who stole her diamond gold bracelet. As the investigation continued, Mr. Dantas discovered that her housekeeper had stolen and sold the bracelet. He also revealed that the housekeeper had two very sick little boys that needed special care but she could not afford it. Furthermore, he found that when the woman hired her housekeeper, she was aware of the housekeeper’s illegal immigration status and used it to pay very low rate for the housekeeping services. Now, Mr. Dantas had to make a decision, whether he reports the housekeeper and also prosecutes this woman for hiring an illegal immigrant or if he dismisses the case altogether by omitting the two illegal situations. If Mr. Dantas chooses to report the housekeeper to the immigration service, then she and her two children will be deported. At the same time, the woman will be prosecuted for hiring an illegal immigrant for personal gains. On the other hand, if Mr. Dantas neglects the records by dismissing the case, Mr. Dantas might be charged for not completing his legal obligations. The case investigates the dilemma of what should Mr. Dantas do and why.

Casino Oil Services Company

Country represented in the case: Columbia

When Casino Oil Services Company was close to the day to obtain the ISO 9001 certification, Rebecca Perez, a young purchasing analyst at the procurement department, revealed data that might jeopardize the entire certification process and the company’s future. It was pretty sure that the top management would not like what was on the way, so Rebecca could be fired if she proceeds with the information. According to the literature, running the business in an international environment is full of ethical challenges. An issue may not be a problem in one’s own culture but maybe a real dilemma in a certain culture, and Columbia is one of those with corruption. Opportunism and Machiavellianism are accepted as normal by people. This study is trying to solve an ethical dilemma in an “everyone is doing it” environment and explains what solutions should be taken and why.

Consulting Report of Scholarship Election in SHUFE

Country represented in the case: China

Yajing Wang, who was the advisor of the department of insurance in Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SHUFE), was in charge of the student scholarship affairs. In 2010, she faced a dilemma of which of two finalists to award with this scholarship: the highly qualified Ding or highly popular and well-supported Zhao. The case involves three levels of ethical dilemma analysis: personal, organizational and societal. The personal level mainly refers to Ms. Wang’s personal dilemma. The case analyzes each option through the frameworks of consequences, principles, and integrity, and it provides recommendations for the ethical course of action. At the level of organizational ethics, the case analyzes why the burden of such a decision was solely on Ms. Wang and it recommends changes that SHUFE makes to avoid such a situation in the future. At the societal level of ethics, the case analyzes the options of creating ethics for the whole society and suggests the values that the university could bring to the society through the ethics of its behavior and how publicity of similar decisions might contribute to China’s society in large.
